The word problems have been written by practising teachers in line with the Blocks
and Units of the Renewed Framework for Mathematics. Questions have been written
to match appropriate objectives from each Block and Unit.
The books are accompanied by an editable CD-ROM. This is ideal for use on interactive
whiteboards and also for creating additional differentiated problems to cater for
all ability groups. Each book also contains a suggested whole school step-by-step
procedure for solving word problems. This can be printed and displayed or given
to each child for reference when they are engaged in problem solving activities.
The word problems, which provide great practice for Ma1 Using and Applying, can
be used in conjunction with any other scheme of work as well as a purposeful homework
resource. They can be used to reinforce a particular objective from the Framework

gleaned from children’s work on the word problems to inform decision making when
completing APP Grids.
The Using and Applying strand permeates the whole of the Renewed Framework and the
Mathematics National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 and 2.
