The Year 6 Word Problems have been written by practising teachers in line with the
Year 6 Blocks and Units of the Renewed Framework for Mathematics. Questions have
been written to match appropriate objectives from each Block and Unit.
The book contains a suggested whole school step-by-step procedure for solving word
problems. This can be printed and displayed or given to each child for reference
when they are engaged in problem solving activities. In the Year 6 book, the problems
are ideal for independent work or they can be displayed on the interactive whiteboard
and children can be guided through the process of problem solving.
The questions are arranged, in general, so that the more difficult problems come
towards the end of the page. This means that differentiation can be easily achieved
with the less able children working through the earlier questions and the more able
children going on to complete the whole page.
The Year 6 CD-ROM contains editable copies of the pages in the book. These can be
edited and saved if required to provide extra practice or additional differentiated
problems. The electronic versions on the CD-ROM can also be used on an inter-active
whiteboard, facilitating class discussion and investigation.
The word problems, which provide great practice for Ma1 Using and Applying, can
be used in conjunction with any other scheme of work and they can be used to reinforce
a particular objective from the Framework; teachers can use the information gleaned
from children’s work on the word problems to inform decision making when completing
APP Grids. The book also provides a very useful and purposeful homework resource.
The Using and Applying strand permeates the whole of the Renewed Framework and the
Mathematics National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 and 2. These well-designed problems
