This is a high quality maths assessment system for children in Year 1. The materials
have been written by practising primary teachers and heads who have a very strong
maths background. The assessments, which have been designed to support the Renewed
Primary Maths Framework, APP and Assessment for Learning, follow on from our highly
acclaimed and successful assessments for the original Numeracy Framework. We have
already supplied almost 3000 of our Renewed Framework assessments to primary schools.
The assessments are purposely designed to avoid the ‘look’ of a formal test. They
are intended to be presented to children as a piece of formative work at the end
of a unit block.
The assessments are designed to complement the ASSESSING PUPILS' PROGRESS STRATEGY
(APP). Each question from the assessments is related to an objective
from the Renewed Framework. The questions and objectives have been fully cross referenced
to the APP Guidelines Grids - this will save teachers hours of work when gathering
evidence and making judgements for APP purposes. The materials are formative as
well as summative and they assess the objectives for each block and unit of the
Renewed Framework. They provide a detailed breakdown of the strengths and weaknesses
of individuals, a group or class. Each block and unit assessment can be used as
evidence to support judgements when implementing APP. This evidence then informs
future planning and becomes an integral part of a school's ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING
POLICY.
Using the assessments
There is an assessment for the children's learning in each of the 15 blocks and
units. In Year 1, there are 10 questions in each assessment - 6 written questions
and 4 oral questions. The written questions, which should be done before the oral
questions, can be completed as a whole class or group or on an individual basis.
The oral tests should be carried out on a one to one or small group basis, as appropriate.
Any necessary equipment is indicated at the beginning of each assessment.
The assessments have been designed with maximum flexibility regarding when they
should be carried out. They will fit any curriculum design or format and are completely
flexible. The notes which accompany the assessments are concise and clearly explain
the administration and usage of the materials.
We have also developed a guide to levelling to complement the assessment system.
Each child can be given a level when an assessment or assessments have been completed;
a simple conversion table is provided to facilitate this. This is vital in order
to effectively assess and track children's progress.
There is also an objectives grid and an attachable set of objectives for each assessment.
After plotting the children's results onto the grid, it then becomes clear which
objectives need further reinforcement and where any gaps in learning may have occurred.
The grid can be used to analyse the learning of individual children, specific groups
or the whole class.
We also have available the Year 1 SP Assessment Analysis Program.
This software, which is simple to operate, provides vital information about the
learning of children in Year 1. The software analyses the performance of children,
it provides a NC level and it also automatically highlights APP grids for every
child in the class, if required. Further information and a demo version of the program
are available to download by following the link to YEAR 1 SP ASSESSMENT ANALYSIS PROGRAM.
